Evolving WAAS to Serve L1/L5 Users

چکیده
GPS has launched its first L5 capable satellites and plans to achieve L5 Full Operational Capability (FOC) in the 2019 time frame. L5 is of great interest to the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and the aviation community, as it will allow aircraft to measure and remove the ionospheric delay affecting each ranging observation. Currently, this error source is the most significant cause of unavailability for WAAS users. Its elimination will result in greater performance and a larger service area under WAAS. However, in order to take advantage of L5, both the aircraft and WAAS will need to be updated. We have previously recommended changes to the airborne protection level calculations to exploit these new signals. In this paper we describe changes that must be made to WAAS to support the new protection level equations and provide dual-frequency service.

Real-Time Dual-Frequency (L1/L5) GPS/WAAS Software Receiver
This paper demonstrates a real-time software receiver supporting GPS/WAAS dual-frequency (L1/L5) processing. The software receiver is implemented on a widely-available recent generation multi-core processor and is capable of post-processing datasets from collection hardware. Key contributions of this software receiver are that 1) it is perhaps the first receiver capable positioning solely on L5...
متن کاملVertical Guidance Performance Analysis of the L1–L5 Dual-Frequency GPS/WAAS User Avionics Sensor
This paper investigates the potential vertical guidance performance of global positioning system (GPS)/wide area augmentation system (WAAS) user avionics sensor when the modernized GPS and Galileo are available. This paper will first investigate the airborne receiver code noise and multipath (CNMP) confidence (σair). The σair will be the dominant factor in the availability analysis of an L1-L5 ...
متن کاملTechniques for Graceful Reversion from Dual to Single Frequency WAAS
This paper investigates techniques to sustain dualfrequency ionosphere performance when a dual-frequency airborne user loses all but one GPS frequency while descending into the radio frequency interference (RFI) field. In this paper, we are particularly interested in the case where the user transitions from L1-L5 to having L5only. That is because the uncertainty of the L5-only ionospheric delay...
متن کاملA Dual-frequency L1/E5a Galileo Test Receiver
The date is fast approaching for the first Galileo signals to be broadcast from space. In anticipation of this event, NovAtel has undertaken various Galileo related projects over the past three years. Projects have included sample level software simulations sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA) and a single frequency BOC(1,1) receiver prototype sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA...
متن کاملAnalysis of a Three-Frequency GPS/WAAS Receiver to Land an Airplane
This paper investigates the vertical guidance performance of a multiple frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) (L1, L2, and L5)/Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) receiver in the presence of inclement weather and radio frequency interference (RFI). There are several ways to take advantage of the multiple frequencies. For example, one can calculate ionosphere delay in the airplane. This wou...
